Return to Training-2.0

Dear athletes

As per the government guidance Leeds City training nights can resume from Thursday 3rd December. We are fortunate to have such dedicated coaches who are keen to get back up and running immediately.

Please book in to a session using the booking system as before, (a minimum of 3 hours before the session starts so coaches know who to expect):

See our Covid protocols here

Training fees will be waived for December but will need to resume in January to ensure the clubs ongoing financial viability. More details on setting up payments to follow.

Unfortunately we still do not have use of the indoors as yet but hope that by working with the council we can offer this as soon as possible.

We look forward to seeing you all soon.

Returning to training

Dear Members

I’m delighted to share that the club is making preparations to resume training nights at South Leeds from Tuesday 8thSeptember.

This is subject to us adhering to a risk assessment and specific restrictions proposed by LCAC and agreed by Leeds City Council. We will be doing everything we can to keep training fun and as relaxed as possible whilst also observing social distancing rules and some changes to our set up.

Changes you can expect to see are:

  1. You will need to use a booking system to let us know which sessions you will be attending (Please bear with us whilst we develop this) We expect to have it in place by 2 Sept ready for the 1st session on the 8th.
  2. All activities will be outside, the indoor track is still closed for now. Please dress accordingly!
  3. Everyone who previously trained at the club will be welcome to attend, however should we reach maximum capacity in any groups, club members will be given priority.
  4. All athletes will need to train with a group supervised by a coach, unaccompanied athletes (including seniors) will not be able to train alone.
  5. Please help things run smoothly by observing the one way systems, and other changes, our ability to run club nights is based on being able to keep to the new set up.

Coaches have been invited to a pre-opening meeting on 1st Sept to finalise the new arrangements. After that more detail will follow regarding group timing and allocated spaces within the stadium, please bear with us. In the meantime, the risk assessment is attached if you want to get familiar with it.  Please keep an eye on our facebook page for further updates.

The following statement has been released regarding the cancellation of Northern Athletics organised events including the Northern Athletics Championships 2020:

29th April 2020

Statement: suspension of competitions extended | U20/U23 Champs postponed

Suspension of athletics competition extended to 30 June 2020.
England Athletics U20/U23 Track & Field Championships postponed.
Following previous statements on 17 March and 24 March, England Athletics, in collaboration with the other Home Country Athletics Federations and UKA, can confirm that the suspension period relating specifically to athletics competition has been extended until at least the 30 June 2020.
We have collectively taken the decision to extend the suspension of licensed competition activity due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and in recognition that event organisers, clubs, athletes, officials and coaches at all levels of the sport need clarity, advanced notice and time to plan.
In addition to this announcement, England Athletics can also confirm the postponement of its own U20/U23 Track & Field Championships – originally scheduled to take place on 6-7 June 2020 in Bedford.
We are mindful that licensed competition providers may need to make decisions relating to facility hire if they are contractually bound. We also need to be realistic in considering the likely availability of officials between now and June and first and foremost to ensure their safety. In addition, we are aware that securing the required level of first aid medical support for events has become increasingly challenging with providers such as the St. John’s Ambulance ceasing to support major events until at least the end of June.
We recognise that some licensed competition providers have already taken the decision to postpone their competitions during this period and our latest domestic competition planning with UKA and the other Home Countries now makes provision for a 1st July start at the earliest. However, this may move back further depending on government guidance and advice on issues including insurance, health & safety and medical service provision.
Whilst all licensed competition events in our sport scheduled up to 30 June 2020 are suspended, we will continue to review the wider suspension of all other athletics activity outside of competition (currently set to 31 May 2020). We will wait for a further announcement from the UK government in relation to the nationwide coronavirus lockdown period, expected during week commencing 4 May, before further reviewing and updating on the current suspension period covering all other athletics activity.

Coronavirus Statement (updated 24 March)

Coronavirus Statement: last updated 24 March at 11am

Following the further restrictions on movement put in place by the UK Government last night, UKA and the Home Country Athletics Federations have made the following updates to our previous statement issued on 17 March:

  1. Extending the suspension of all athletics activity in England to the 31 May. [Initially this had been agreed to the end of April]. This suspension includes all organised athletics activity in the UK, including all competitions, formal club activities, running groups, and all Education activity (coach, official, teacher).
  2. Strengthening our position on coaching activity – We are now mandating that all physical coaching ceases, and only be conducted via virtual means during this period. Bringing groups of people together to train, however small, can no longer be permitted under the strict ‘Stay at home’ measures implemented by the UK Government.

These decisions have not been taken lightly and have been made in light of the continuing and real risk to life and to the NHS posed by the spread of the COVID-19 virus in England. We must now to all we can do. We would ask that the athletics community in England continues to help one another by staying connected and supportive of each other whilst at home in these unprecedented times. We will continue to review the situation in line with Government and Public Health guidance.

In addition to providing clarity to clubs, athletes, runners, coaches and officials, we are acutely aware that a number of competition providers have already made the bold decision to postpone their events in recognition that they stand to incur additional contractual costs on facilities that they have booked should they not make that decision now. We will continue to review this decision as the government guidance evolves but one thing is clear and that is that athletics, running and sport in general is special and is an important contributor to our way of life but it is very much secondary to protecting and saving lives at this current time.

In its latest measures to contain the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19), the UK Government has announced that everyone must now stay at home except in exceptional circumstances.

From last night (Monday 23 March), the only permissible reasons to leave your home are as follows:

  • To shop for basic necessities and that should be limited to once a day
  • To take exercise once a day – but alone or with those you live with, no gatherings of more than two people
  • For medical reasons or to care for a vulnerable person
  • To travel to essential work if that cannot be done at home. Further guidance to employers is pending.

While athletics is predominantly an outdoor sport that allows athletes to exercise in the fresh air, the message to all of us is clear, we must play our part in containing the spread of COVID-19. We urge our members to utilise the opportunity to exercise as laid out by both governments, but as such, any informal small group training sessions of athletes or face-to-face coached sessions must now cease (*unless they are with your own household members as above).

We have witnessed some very creative home and/or garden-based training sessions (safely of course) during the last week, and we would urge clubs and coaches to continue to be innovative during this period. A number of schools have also been task setting for their pupils and it would be of immense value to continue to engage athletes and your members in similar style tasks for athletics.

There are numerous ways in which people can remain active whether that be core strength training at home, HIIT, Circuits, running and so on (whilst adhering to the government guidance) so we will be actively promoting these. We will of course be pushing out digital content relating to exercising at home during this week thanks to the work of our respective coaching and athlete development team members.

England Athletics CEO Chris Jones commented “We all have a responsibility to play our part in mitigating risk and in reducing the spread of this virus. It will be deflating to many but if we do pull together and adhere to the guidance issued then we will come through this period. In the meantime we will be working tirelessly as partners to provide value to our member clubs, athletes, runners, coaches and volunteers and will be organising activities and providing resources utilising a range of methods such as online forums, webinars and podcasts that will help people prepare for a time when we can all look forward with renewed optimism as an Athletics & Running family.”

These decisions are difficult ones to make, but right now, it is our shared responsibility to prioritise the health of our local communities by working together to follow the Government guidelines. In doing so, this will ensure that we all get back to competing in the sport we love so much sooner.

Good luck and stay safe!

Urgent Update From Leeds City AC General Committee re 2020/21 Annual Memberships and Training Fees.

** Updated 24th March: All training fee refund requests will be actioned within the next 7 days**

Dear members.

As you will be aware the John Charles Centre for Sport (JCCS) is now closed until further notice due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.  The committee have decided to suspend training fees until the centre reopens.  Please can EVERYONE cancel your monthly standing order due 1 April 2020 immediately.  For those who have already paid the annual training fee please send the name as it appears on your account, sort code and account number to the treasurer (James Gannon) james.gannon@leedscityac.org who will arrange to refund the training fee.  We will communicate the revised annual fee and the date to re start the monthly standing order payment when training resumes.

We want to continue collecting annual memberships due by 31 March 2020 as normal to ensure our members are registered with England Athletics and to ensure the club can continue to function on a day to day basis.  We will review the membership fee that has been paid for 2020/21 when athletics resumes and we know where the club stands with its overall costs in 2020/21. The General Committee will establish if there will be a refund or a reduction in the 2021/22 year so members are not disadvantaged. Please complete the renewal form and email it to lcacmembership@gmail.com and Pat Childs will check the and will confirm acceptance before payment is taken by bank transfer or by card payment over the telephone.

Hopefully the situation will improve in the near future and we look forward to getting back to normal as soon as possible.

Take Care

General Committee

A message from England Athletics CEO Chris Jones

19 March 2020

In these uncertain times I wanted to reach out to you personally as a member of the England Athletics family to ensure you that we will be doing all we can to support you during the coming days and weeks.

As deflating and disruptive as the decision to suspend all activity until the end of April will have been, I have no doubt that it was the right decision to make as we play our own part as an athletics and running family in helping to prevent the spread of this awful virus. We do however know this is a hugely difficult time for our members, clubs and organisations and we’re continuing to talk to as many of you as possible to get a fuller picture about the impact coronavirus (COVID-19) is having.

Athletics and Running play a vitally important role in our society and positively impacts the lives of many people. We know that it brings people together, forging lifelong friendships and companionships and in providing a place of belonging and learning for many thousands of participants, whatever their background, ability, age, gender or aspiration.

I know how important my local club was for me as I grew up and developed into adulthood and I know those same personal experiences will harbour in the soul of many club members across the land. It is a feeling that compels you to want to inspire and create experiences for others to feel the same and it is why our great sport continues to offer so much to so many. I have witnessed this spirit in hundreds of athletics and running clubs and groups across England during the last decade. Our network of great clubs and running groups has continued to grow in recent times because of the inspirational work of so many selfless volunteers who give so much for others and whose great energy has fostered an unbreakable spirit of togetherness. It is this same spirit that will see us through these troubling times.

Inevitably we will all need to adapt and change our approach to ensure that we maintain all that is good about our sport. Despite the suddenness of change, I am already aware that a number of forward thinking clubs and groups are already adapting and are thinking creatively about how they maintain connectivity with their members during this fallow period, utilising digital tools and systems such as webinars and other forms to coordinate and convey information, advice and guidance to best support the physical and mental health and wellbeing of their members. As an organisation we will be doing the same and will be working to do all we can to provide support to our member clubs and organisations in this respect. We will all need to think differently about how we operate as we work together through this period.

Over the coming weeks we are committed to:

  • Supporting the Athletics & Running family in England to ensure that we come through this period together in as strong a position as possible.
  • Working with you, our members, to understand what specific support is required across our clubs to sustain our sport in the short and the long term.
  • Changing the way in which we communicate and provide our services so that we are doing everything we can to encourage people to stay active, wherever possible, which we think is now more important than ever.
  • Rescheduling specific activities and programmes for our members and participants.

Please continue to visit our website and social media channels for information and advice: www.englandathletics.org/coronavirus.

Owing to the unprecedented and uncertain times we find ourselves in as a sport and wider community, we do understand that clubs and other Athletics & Running bodies will be experiencing some unforeseen pressures in the immediate term. We are aware that many of our member clubs will be struggling to coordinate themselves as they would normally do during this period of suspension and with this in mind we are reviewing a number of areas as an organisation as we approach what is traditionally the outdoor spring and summer season and for many the beginning of another membership year.

We will need some time to do this robustly and with the right information at our disposal. We will do all we can to listen, and to be flexible in our actions during this period.

Over the next 24 hours some our systems including the MyAthletics portal, licence checkers and Athletics Hub will be temporarily unavailable. This is to conduct critical maintenance to our IT infrastructure so that over the coming weeks and months our digital systems, that help clubs communicate and provide access to helpful resources, are not disrupted. Please note that this will not affect our website, where we will continue to provide regular updates, or your ability to contact our Membership Services Team. We are acting immediately before any further restrictions impact our staff and partners required to undertake the work. Please bear with us.

If you haven’t already been in touch, please complete the feedback form on our website. We do want to hear from you so let us know:

  • How coronavirus is impacting you or your club or organisation?
  • The type of help you think would be most beneficial.

Above all else we hope you; your family and your friends remain safe and healthy. Take care and give care to each other. We will get through this.

Best wishes,
Chris Jones

Given the fast moving developments around COVID-19 the LCAC committee have made the decision to suspend club training nights for the foreseeable future with immediate effect.  With repairs and maintenance happening this week on the outdoor track, it is particularly relevant that we don’t crowd athletes into the indoor facility. The committee will review the situation on a weekly basis and update the website, Facebook and email the coaches at the beginning of each week on a Monday evening. As of Monday evening 16th March 2020 the stadium remains open so athletes are free to train at their own risk and pay the Council at the desk. Please be responsible in deciding whether to attend training or not and do not train unsupervised or leave any young athletes unsupervised at the facility. Thank you to all our athletes & volunteers at this difficult time, we will see you all soon.

Training Night Fees from 1st April 2020

After the successful launch of annual and monthly payment Training fees 2019/20 season for members using John Charles Stadium (JCS) on Leeds City Training nights, training night fees will continue to be linked to the renewal of your membership for 2020/21 season on one of the following options:

  • Pay your membership fee lump sum along with an annual lump sum for training night subs by bank transfer or card payment.
  • Pay your membership fee lump sum by bank transfer or card payment and your training night subs will continue by monthly standing order.
  • Membership will only be confirmed when a form has been completed and accepted by the club. BANK TRANSFERS SHOULD ONLY BE MADE WHEN THE MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY HAS ACCEPETD THE COMPLETED FORM.

This is effective for all members except those who don’t train at all at the JCS and non-members who attend training at JCS, who will continue to pay ad hoc on the nights they attend by card ONLY.

The cost for ad hoc (by exception only with permission) for members has increased to £4 for seniors and £3 for juniors per night and for all non-members it has increased to £5 per night. Any ad hoc member or non-member will not be allowed to train if they do not pay and they will be suspended ongoing from a training night if they are found to be training without paying.

Monthly payments are due by standing order on the 1st of every month for the full 12 months. The cost of your monthly training night subs fee will depend on your membership status (see below) and have been calculated over a 40 week period (meaning we have allowed 12 weeks of non-training throughout the year (due to holidays, injury, exams, other sports etc).

The costs in the table below are based on the Leeds Lions, Wheelchair racing team and seniors training only once per week (40 training sessions per year) and all others training twice per week (80 training sessions per year) over a 40 week period. Once the training night fees have been set up a member can come as often as they like on a training night (maximum of twice per week over all 52 weeks if they wanted – at no extra cost).

  Monthly payment Annual payment
LCAC ad hoc members senior by exception only

LCAC ad hoc members   junior by exception only

Ad hoc £4 per night

Ad hoc £3 per night

Ad hoc £4 per night

Ad hoc £3 per night

Non-members Ad hoc £5 per night Ad hoc £5 per night

What if I don’t pay?

If at any time you cancel your standing order, your account will fall into arrears. You will be asked by the club to bring your account balance up to date by no later than the end of that month and set up the standing order for future payments.

If this does not happen by the 1st of the following month, you will be suspended from training at John Charles Stadium on club nights. Each monthly payment missed will be added to your outstanding balance. Once your account balance is brought up to date and a new standing order set up for the 1st of each month, your membership will be reinstated.

If an athlete leaves the club with an account in arrears you will not be allowed to re-join the club without paying the account arrears.

If the member is in genuine financial difficulty, the member needs to contact the treasurer of the club (see email below) immediately to review their circumstances.

What happens now?

  • The new membership forms will be updated 22 February 2020 and emailed out to all members on 22 February 2020 (They will also be available on the website and FB page from 22 February 2020). This will include information telling the member which of the above group they fall into and what their monthly or annual payment will be.
  • The member will need to decide whether they want to pay their training night subs as a lump sum (along with their membership renewal payment by bank transfer or card payment when they submit their forms) or whether they want to pay monthly.
  • Monthly paying members will to continue their monthly standing order on the 1st of every month. Members will need to ensure they pay this amount each month over 12 months, even when they are not training or are on holiday as payments have been calculated using a 40 week period allowing 12 weeks off during the year for injury and holiday.

If you have any questions please email the Leeds City Athletic Club treasurer James Gannon (james.gannon@leedscityac.org). He is also available to speak to at the club on most training nights.
