Structured, Supportive Training for all Athletes
At Leeds City Athletic Club, we offer structured, supportive training for athletes of all ages and abilities β from beginners and juniors to competitive track & field performers. Our coaching team, facilities and training environment are designed to help you improve your technique, fitness and confidence across all athletics disciplines.
Where We Train
All club training takes place at the John Charles Centre for Sport, Leeds β a dedicated athletics facility featuring:
- A 50 m indoor 6-lane straight track for sprint, hurdles and strength & conditioning.
- Indoor throwing cages for discus, hammer and shot.
- An outdoor track
- Full jumping and throwing areas for long jump, triple jump, high jump and javelin.
- A recently acquired pole vault mat to support technical training.
These facilities give our athletes year-round opportunities to work on speed, power, technique, endurance and event-specific skills.
When & How We Train
Please refer to our training calendar but for your information at a glance we meet on:
- Tuesdays & Thursdays evenings Training typically runs from early evening, with different groups and coaches
- Focusing on: Track sprints & hurdles, Middle distance sessions, Jumping events (long jump, high jump, triple jump), Throws (discus, javelin, shot & hammer), Endurance and conditioning work
- Athletes are grouped by age and ability to ensure sessions are safe, effective and enjoyable.
- Dedicated wheelchair racing sessions also run weekly for athletes of all abilities.

Training on the Track
Whether youβre taking on your first 100 m race, improving cross-country times, or perfecting a long jump, our sessions at Leeds City Athletic Club are designed to help every athlete develop safely, effectively, and enjoyably.
Our coaching focuses on key athletics elements:
- Technique development β From block starts to jumping mechanics, we ensure every athlete masters the fundamentals for safety and performance.
- Speed and power work β Sprint drills, acceleration exercises, and strength routines are tailored to enhance explosive speed and overall athleticism.
- Strength & conditioning β Structured sessions help reduce injury risk, improve endurance, and build the physical foundation needed for all events.
- Event-specific skills β Whether itβs throws, jumps, or distance running, our coaches provide targeted drills to refine technique and efficiency.
- Race strategy & mental preparation β Learn tactics, pacing, and mindset strategies to boost performance in competitions and achieve personal goals.
Training Away From the Track
While club sessions form the core of your development, great training also includes:
πββοΈ Endurance runs on local routes β Explore canal paths, parks, and reservoir circuits around Leeds to build stamina and cardiovascular fitness.
π Hill and strength work β Short, steep hills and resistance exercises help develop power, speed, and overall athletic resilience.
ποΈββοΈ Gym sessions β Focus on mobility, core strength, and injury prevention with tailored exercises suitable for all athletes.
π€ΈββοΈ Flexibility & recovery β Stretching routines, foam rolling, and recovery drills to enhance performance and reduce injury risk.
π― Technical drills at home β Event-specific exercises like sprint starts, jumping techniques, or throwing practice that can be done independently.

New athletes can enjoy 2 taster sessions to see if the clubβs right for them.
Wheelchair athletes get their first session free to check equipment compatibility.
A small charge applies to taster sessions.
After this, join as a Leeds City Athletic Club member (annual membership), with training fees paid separately.
